I'm an American starting school at the Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne in the fall. I'm moving to Paris the first week in August and I'm kind of hoping to make a few friends before then. I have a pretty wide variety of interests including:Art: Anything modern. There are few places in the world that have made me happier than the Tate Modern in London. My all time favorite artist would have to be Toulouse Lautrec. I just love the withering decadence. His colors are absolutely brilliant. I love how everything usually looks sick. I also like Koons, Rothko, Twombly, Duchamp, Picabia, Hirst, Mondrian, Lichtenstein, de Lempicka... The list goes on and on. (Not to mention, my list of photographers I love is at least equally as long.)
Music: I have really eclectic tastes in music. I guess to make things easy I'll just name my favorite albums.
1. The Best of Puccini, Maria Callas. I'm a huge huge huge opera fan. Maria Callas is the most perfect soprano. Most of my favorite operas are Puccini, but i like others too. I love Manon Lescaut, Madame Butterfly, La Boheme, Le Cid, Norma... Another endless list.
2. Felt Mountain, Goldfrapp. I love techno, but not so much pounding rave shit. I prefer something loungeier, more conceptual. I think Goldfrapp is absolutely brilliant and one of the freshest most versatile groups out there.
3. Erotica, Madonna. I admit it I'm a huge Madonna fan. Erotica is my favorite album hands down. It's her most interesting album musically, and although it's fairly filthy, I think it's her classiest work. Fever is brilliant as is Where Life Begins.
4. The Very Best of Edith Piaf, Edith Piaf. The raw passion in her voice is enough to make me want to just crumple. Her voice is just spectacular. My favorite song would have to be Hymne L'Amour.
5. At Last, Cyndi Lauper. I love vocal jazz, and obviously I love an unusual voice. I thought her takes on jazz standards were both fresh and classic. I still curse myself for not seeing her in Threepenny Opera.
Fashion: As predictable as it sounds, fashion is absolutely the love of my life. I've been sewing since I was three and really couldn't see myself doing anything else. My dream job would be working for Jean Paul Gaultier. In terms of current designers I like Jean Paul Gaultier, Balenciaga (technically Nicolas Ghesquiere), Martin Margiela, Givenchy (Richardo Tisci), Azzedine Alaia, Sonya Rykiel, Vivienne Westwood, Lanvin (Alber Elbaz)... You get the picture.
Literature: I don't read as much as I'd like to, but when i get the chance i will pick up a classic. My favorites would have to be:
1. The Great Gatsby. Poignant, dark and glamorous. How could you possibly go wrong?
2. Madame Bovary. First of all, I'd like to say that flaubert was horribly chauvinistic in his tone towards Emma, but I still loved the book.
3. Anything Tennessee Williams, especially A Streetcar Named Desire. The man so concisely nailed the class structure in America, and in the most damning way possible. Bravo.
Cooking: I really like cooking, especially baking. I take particular pride in my deserts. After I came back from an extended stay at Pratt in New York City I really missed having good pastry shops available to me. So, with necessity (can you really say "necessity" while talking about pastry?) being the mother of invention, I taught myself to bake very well. My chocolate mousse is to die for, as is my Quiche Florentine.
Movies: I'll watch anything good. My definition of good would be well acted, interesting script, and beautifully shot. I'm not into big mainstream movies. I don't like action movies. (Large explosions don't make up for inept actors.) I don't like low brow commedies. (Anything that would be funny to someone under the age of 10 probably isn't particularly funny to me.) I don't really like romantic commedies in general either. They're usually just so cheesey. Movies I do like: Sunset Boulevard, Breakfast a Tiffany's,The Way We Were, A Streetcar Named Desire, Moulin Rouge, Cleopatra, Clueless, Down With Love, Head in the Clouds, All About Eve, Gone With the Wind,Vanity Fair, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Evita, La Vie en Rose, The Notorious Betty Page, Closer, Trainspotting, and many many others, those are just a few off the top of my head.
All in all, I’m very down to earth. I’m very grounded in reality, and I’m passionate about politics. (Actually, that’s a lie I’m passionate about the economy. I’d vote for someone who wanted to bring back sodomy laws if they could fix the trade deficit in America. Having said that, I’m a dyed in the wool Democrat.) I have a fairly quiet disposition, but I do have my wild moments. In general I prefer a quiet dinner and a movie at home with a love interest rather than a night on the town. I’m very easy going in relationship. People are always surprised because I’m so meticulous (that’s the nice way of saying it) about my work. It doesn’t take very much to make me happy. I really enjoy cuddling, kissing, hanging out, etc. Conversation is the most important thing to me in a relationship.
Anyway, if I haven’t scared you off with the beastly length of my profile, I’m always open to chatting. Just message me for contact information or more pictures.
